Night Games in April

Night and day differences
amplified by falling mercury
illuminate the question -- If
you only have forty-three
night games on the schedule,
why roll them out in April,
when winter winds beteem
the still dormant ivy and roughly
stifle bats and sweep empty stands silent
as bats go cold and can not overcome
important pitching performances, avoiding
the extremes that have plagued the team
early in the season, but average and not excellent
nonetheless.
