Remember Too

Remember too the lives that were sacrificed under the flag,

but at the end of a rope.

Remember too that the peace I feel in farm country,

was, and too often is,

my neighbor’s terror.

Remember too how communities of color embraced

the Fourth of July with vigor,

while their southern brethren stored guile

and unleashed the fruits of their hate

with such vile dominance of the region

as to stamp out

Emancipation,

Declaring allegiance to bigotry, rather than pursuing an

Amended way of life.

Remember too that despite how far we have come, there are still so many waiting to freely, “bask in the sunshine of Liberty.”
