Squirrel in a Tree

Instinct carries him to the tree,
food and water and attention set him free
from worry, and he climbs Maslow's ladder
blazing past his needs physiological and
no worries about safety. Love and belonging
are feelings he owns, and sitting upon our bed,
his throne room, whose esteem could be higher.
But does the dulled instinct that puts the squirrel
in that tree need to be sharpened for him to hold the key
to climb the final rung? And if he set himself free,
what would become of me?
