Racing in the Parking Lot

I walk before I run
and accelerate with youth
Gears grime with age, and wheels spun.

He hits top speed and laughs for fun,
I could win the race, but prefer to character sleuth -
I walk before I run.

In my previous incarnation, the race could not be overdone,
but the interim has rusted my muscles, in truth,
gears grime with age and wheels spun.

The lesson lies not in who won,
in the activity lies the proof.
I walk before I run

and run to salvage tales spun
spanning years, passed down by those long in the tooth,
gears grime with age and wheels undone

ride off the rails into the sun,
clouds of fog and memories compile the truth -
I walk before I run,
and gears grime with age and wheels spun.
