We were willing to compromise
3/5 of a man in order to form
a more or less perfect union,
but not willing to compromise
the loss of land and more importantly
the wealth it brought. No one was
fighting to free the slaves, and no one
seems to have any energy to argue about
what we should have been fighting for, or against,
but instead we lavish an abundance of emotional
and political capital refusing to acknowledge
the elephant in the room we translucently were not fighting about.
