Eighteen to Twenty-Five

"You have no idea
how much you'll change
between the time you
are eighteen and twenty-five"
she says to eighteen year old me
at 6:30 as we wait for the last child
to be picked up from the playground.
I have locked up and her daughter romps
around the playground as her mother's words
slide off my sleeves - she is twenty-six with a kindergartner,
I am eight years her junior, and
though she supervises me at work,
we sit as equals in economics class -
me a freshmen who knows everything,
she is just trying to get a late start in the right direction.
Today, as I stand before high school juniors and seniors
at twice their age, I repeat,
"You have no idea
how much you'll change
between the time you
are eighteen and twenty-five,"
Knowing full well it is sage advice,
and like me, they will not fathom its truth,
a concept difficult to grasp while you still know everything.
