Broken

You will not remove my laughter.
You will not drown my reserve.
You will not occupy my mind.
You will not monopolize my time.
You will not steal my joy.

I will teach children to have civil debates -
to read books from a diverse canon,
to relish the opportunity to work hard
with your mind or with your hands and
often with both. To refuse to be ashamed
of your occupation, color, history - to
embrace the broken pieces from which
you were formed.

We are all broken pieces, healed
through a broken and contrite heart.
