BBQ and Big Red

I witnessed her, a blossoming Texan,
on a cold January morning.

Emerging from the Guadalupe River
like an insect before the rubber hatch.

My daughter became a Texan today.
Took a leap of faith in the tried and true of BBQ.
Sliced a pickle, stacked a perfectly sized piece of onion,
and bravely added just the right amount of jalapeƱo -

enough to bring a tear to a father's eye -
as she washed down the perfect bite of brisket
with Big Red.
