After Alternate Self-Portrait

One day, I will drift
through a fog of nostalgia
and emerge in the cold
grey light of dawn.

Arriving at the beginning
and the end simultaneously.
I will jump into the middle
of life - throwing off the awkwardness
of teenage interaction and not yet
wearing a silver crown of wisdom.

This was the first "what do you notice" write into the day assignment for the 2017-1018 school year. My students noticed that this poem has no punctuation, and drew connections to the work of E.E. Cummings. After a little more prodding they found examples of alliteration, and an analogy that serves to make a universal comparison rather than a particular one. We reviewed tone and then spent some time writing.
