Reverend Doctor

Reverend Doctor -
The title never fit.
For me you were always more comfortable
Covered in sandy loam, deer corn dust,
And lately, river bottom mud
As you launch grandchildren into the water
Transforming yourself into a human step stool.

Pastor Dan was more like a glove.
The title slid off the tongue,
No formal introduction necessary.
It was the way you handed out bread and wine,
Body and blood,
And each and every congregant's name.
